America is not a Democracy.
Dec 3rd, 2009 at 2:02am

To many times I see Republicans, Democrats, and even sometimes Libertarians talking about how bad the electoral college. But we, as libertarians, need to understand that the electoral college is in place as a check. It's a moderate check to help prevent a entirely to popular president from being elected, and possibly forming a monarchy or dictatorship. It's not entirely effective, but it is a check none the less.

Second on my agenda is the Senators. Sometime awhile ago (do to none other then popular pressure), senators were moved from being voted in by State Legislators, to being voted in based on popular vote (i.e. Democratic). With the amendment that changed this part of the constitution, the People and Congress both removed a vital check on the power of congress, and the power of popular consent.

You see, the Constitution is (or better, was) one of the worlds most perfect balancing acts. The founders understood that not only were monarchies a deathly threat to freedom and liberties, but so were pure democracies, if not even worse. They understood that human beings, when properly motivated as a group, could be just as affective at destroying freedoms as a single person. The masses can be swayed, just as easily as a king. For example, in 2001 when terrorists attacked America, everyone became unified in this country. Almost regardless of race, color, creed, nationality, religion, and political beliefs, there was a massive general consensus that someone had to pay. George Bush, in response, and feeling that it was his duty, declared war on Afghanistan, and then Iraq further down the line. Now, if cooler heads had prevailed, and the proper checks for declaring war had been observed, we probably never would have entered Afghanistan, or at the very least we never would have invaded Iraq. But Democracy got the better of us and we ended up in a big crap-sandwich.

Democracy is a sham. It's as big a failure as monarchies, Communism, and Nazism. When our constitution ordained congress and the Federal government with limited powers, It also put a check on the people and democracy. I feel that these checks have been nearly all destroyed in the hopes of achieving a "More Free"  society. Unfortunately, whatever seemed like a great idea at the time, more often then not ends up being a grant of unlimited power to the Federal Government, and a lose of rights for all Americans.
And remember to always keep in mind: Inalienable rights are always there, regardless of what Uncle Sam says. Exercise them irregardless.

I still dont know if I agree with the Electoral College.

Senators being elected by the legislature, talked about that in another thread. But when senators have as much power as they do right now, I dont think I could support going back to the old system before fixing that.

Bet yea, agree. Democracy doesnt work. The democratic republic is what we need.

The problem is not the process of election its the scope of what electoral authorities are allowed to do.Government does things that just should not be in their remit.

Its like joining a fishing club and the club one days decides to make rules as to what type of house you can live in or what you should eat for breakfast.

saying that the president is an elected monarch with far greater powers than European monarchs have.

Comnsider this. Most countries have a psoition called 'foriegn secretary' because its the job of teh minister who deal with foriegn countries. In the US he has the rather non decriptive titles of 'secretary of state'.It doesn't describe his job just who he works for .Why because teh principle job of the Government was dealing with Foriegn governments not dealing with internal affairs.

Likewise the president is the C in C of the armed forces not grand wizard of schools and hospitals.

They should be making treaties with foriegn countries or beating the shit out of those who attack their nation and that ,frankly is all.

The idea behind democracy was certainly based on more morality than the general rule of countries, but we need a constitution to protect us from democracy.

Democracy is certainly more moral than statism, which holds that we belong to the state and that we have to "Earn our rights". This is unacceptable, because as humans, we have natural rights. We are inherently entitled to our actions, for as long as we do not deprive other people of their actions. The problem with democracy is that, well, pure democracy can take away from this.

If we lived in a pure democracy, homosexuality would be outlawed, businesses would be taxed to death, every minority that we decided we didn't like would be outlawed, and we would basically have a mob rule.

My kids are taught in their private school that we live in a democracy. If my kids were to say in a test that they live in a "Constitutional Republic,"  the answer would be incorrect.

I wish schools would not incorrectly brainwash children about Us government history and theory.

Democracy is a concept advocated by progressives who use their socialist mandate via mob rule. Democracy is a propaganda tool used by modern progressives to make it look as though policy is legitimate, even though they are gradually taking everyone down a collectivist highway.

I wish the founders had made for electoral college votes be tied to the number of Senators and not House members - or since it would be the same thing just one vote per state regardless of population size.  I think the State of Rhode Island should have every last bit as much say in who becomes president as the State of California, Wyoming to New York, Connecticut to Texas and so forth.  The Presidency is meant to be an office that represents the 50 states - not the American people directly.  All 50 states should have an equal say in who holds this office, regardless of their population size.

At least small states get the 2 electoral votes from the two Senators and the Senate is made up equally with each state getting 2 Senators. The problem is the Senate hasn't protected states rights.
