Libertarian elected to Australian Senate

I'm sure many of you have heard about this (possibly from me), but I am absolutely ecstatic about the election of David Leyonhjelm to the Australian Senate representing the state of New South Wales. David is a member of the Liberal Democrats, but do not let the name fool you, the party is of libertarian orientation.

Many libertarians in Australia have objected to the name (including myself), but the name is actually partly what helped secure victory. The party which won office, the Liberals, have been seething over what appears to be many votes directed to the Liberal Democrats by mistake. The similar name, along with the luck of the Liberal Democrats taking first position on the Senate ballot paper, seems to suggest that the party had a "fluke" win. They polled about 8% in NSW.

However, they polled around 4% in other states, and Leyonhjelm insists that they would have won regardless in NSW. Personally, I don't care how he got there, as long as he is there.

Leyonhjelm has worked tirelessly for the party and helped build it from nothing. I am also impressed by his hands-on approach, as I have received a number of personal emails thanking me for my membership of the party and my support.

As you can imagine, much of the media has written him off as a gun-nut with fanciful ideas. But they can stick it. Here are a few links people might like to read regarding his election:
