I agree with the general vibe on these forums that socialism can cause lack of prosperity. Lack of prosperity can cause desperation. Desperation can bring out dishonesty. So can having so many of the wrong rules that Average Bob is breaking one or more of them at all times.

As Jeff pointed out, it's more than that. Authoritarianism means people must lie to protect themselves and their families. Even in the U.S., government has been turning us more and more into a nation of liars.

People lie to get plea bargains, people are forced to lie to judges (who don't believe the truth) to avoid contempt charges. People lie on government forms because the clerk says the form won't be processed otherwise. People lie on tax forms because "I don't remember since documenting my life for the IRS isn't my priority" isn't an acceptable answer. Etc, etc, etc.

Government power over people = people needing to lie. Greater power = more lying. It's just simple math.

Having the government lie to us all the time contributes to the problem too.
