You could say that of anything, dumbass.

Probably not "anything"... but so what?
We're talking about Cuba and Communists and the U.S. government and it's policies towards them, and how advocating an anti-Cuban government stance can get people elected in the U.S., which is very practical, for them.

That's right, you said "symbols can matter."
I replied that actions matter more.
I could say that about almost any set of symbols/actions, that's true, but what makes that dumb?

And, it's still quite practical for politicians to get elected on the strength of their anti-Castro/Communist rhetoric, for the politicians anyway.

There aren't any private businesses in Cuba to trade with. Its only the communist government.

Apparently, there are thousands private businesses. And they are growing in numbers.

HAVANA (AP) Cuba's state-run tourism industry is increasingly doing business with the country's new class of private entrepreneurs, trying to improve quality of food and lodging while maintaining a grip on the sector's biggest sources of foreign exchange.

State news agency Prensa Latina has reported that Cuba has 11,000 restaurants, most for Cubans, and 1,260 private establishments known as "paladares," which cater mostly to visitors and foreigners living in Cuba.

If the travel restrictions for Cubans were eased, these numbers would grow even faster.

...and we could get a decent Cuban cigar for under ten bucks.   Cool

A response that misses the point is a dumb response.

The Chief asked what was the point of maintaining an embargo on Cuba. He sees no practical purpose.

You replied to the Chief that the embargo was purely symbolic, but that symbols matter.

Then I said it was very practical for the politicians who get elected supporting the embargo, and further that actions matter more than symbols.

So you called me a dumbass.

Now you say I missed the point and my response was dumb.

My point was, the embargo of Cuba is not merely symbolic, as you said it is, and neither is it pointless as the Chief believes.

I never stated it was pointless. I merely posed the question if it (maintaing a hostile position with Cuba) had any practical purpose.

BIG difference, there.

Surely, you can make that distinction.

Or perhaps not. Embarrassed

Once again, yes, it's very practical for the politicians who get elected by maintaining a hostile position with Cuba. (And the get elected, at least in part, because their constituents support that position.)

"It's pointless" doesn't sound much different to me than "It has no practical purpose".

But please don't explain the "distinction" to me.
