It's interesting to see mention of how easily Cuba could have the trade embargo lifted. But they won't.

"If there is a call for free and fair elections, if political prisoners are released, if unions are allowed to organize and people can move freely within the country. If those three things happen in Cuba, then the embargo would cease to exist."

So Raul, basically the deal is: Convert back to a Republic like we wanted you do in 1959 when your brother ousted Batista and we will lift the trade embargo.

Lol.† †Like that's going to happen.† Lets face it;† as long as there is a Castro able to draw a breath, Cuba will be Communist, and friendly with Russia.†† Period.† †To hope for anything else is highly delusional.

The good news is;† eventually, the Castros will die off, and there will be an opportunity for the US to install a new corrupt official.†† †Preferrably one who HATES Russia!† †Grin

I really hope we get rid of the sort of barbarians in government who would willfully subject other nations of people to barbaric and tyrannical governments, and use our tax money to do it.

BTW, why wouldn't a military coup work in Cuba? They can do that on their own, and it won't cost me a penny.

Fidel Castro's military are loyal to him.† A coup is not in the cards for Cuba.

Since Fidel passed the baton to his brother Raul, there has been a noteable softening of oppression on the citizens.

With time, hopefully, living conditions and standard-of-living will continue to improve for the Cuban people..† †

In the meantime, re-establishing the US embassy and easing of travel restrictions to Cubans will restore some degree of normalcy to the derelict country.

Also Raul Castro has indicated that he wishes to repeal all travel restrictions to Cuban citizens, and let them come and go as they please.† Presumably, he hasn't done this yet because he doesn't want to piss off his brother.

Living conditions for the average Cuban might improve somewhat if American tourists spend lots of money in Cuba, but not perceptibly. The vast majority of the money will go to the government and it's cronies, and help fund the police state.

Cubans have been risking their lives for generations to flee Cuba. How many will leave if it's permitted? That's why it won't be.

Here are some very uplifting articles in Cuba's Constitution that were recently ratified in 2002.† Granted, the rest of it mostly communist/socialist BS, and very frightening to read for any Libertarian.† Even Bernie Sanders would be taken aback from most of it.

Article 8: The state recognizes, respects and guarantees freedom of religion.
In the Republic of Cuba, religious institutions are separate from the state.
The different beliefs and religions enjoy the same consideration.

"Article 19: The state recognizes the right of small farmers to legal ownership of their lands and other real estate and personal property necessary for the exploitation of their land, as prescribed by law."

Article 21: The state guarantees the right to personal ownership of earnings and savings derived from oneís own work, of the dwelling to which one has legal title and of the other possessions and objects which serve to satisfy oneís material and cultural needs.
Likewise, the state guarantees the right of citizens to ownership of their personal or family work tools. These tools may not be used to obtain earning derived from the exploitation of the work of others.

So, the point is, while far from perfect, the Cubans have hope.† As time passes, things *should* improve for them.† I doubt they will ever embrace democracy, though.  But that's no tragedy. Some folks simply aren't cut out for it.

Communists always have had "Constitutions" that sounded wonderful. The U.S. has a Constitution that sounds (and actually works, if you use it) wonderful.

If the government is not held to the constitution, it means nothing. Cuba's government is Sovereign over the people of Cuba, in the name of Communism.

The "thaw" continues.

Four neat things you can now do in Cuba:† Cheesy

Traveling from the U.S. to Cuba
Travel is still limited to 12 authorized categories, including educational, religious and humanitarian work. But would-be travelers are now on the honor system to say which category they fall in. And as of September, permission was extended to close relatives in many of the categories.

Using your cellphone
Verizon Wireless now offers international calling service to Americans traveling in Cuba.

Sending money
Cuban nationals are now permitted to receive unlimited amounts of money from the U.S. Before September, remittances were limited to $2,000 per quarter.

Buying cigars, rum and other souvenirs
Visitors to Cuba can bring up to $400 in merchandise home, including up to $100 worth of tobacco and alcohol.

And four things you can't (not yet, anyways):

Flying commercial
U.S. and Cuban negotiators have yet to strike a civil aviation agreement, opening the door to regularly scheduled commercial air service. Charter flights, however, are available.

Hiring Cuban employees
The U.S. government has allowed American companies in various categories (e.g., export, travel, telecommunications, education) to open offices in Cuba and hire Cuban nationals. Hiring is still generally restricted, however, by the Cuban government.

Trading international cargo
The U.S. government has cleared the way for passenger and cargo vessels to travel directly to and from Cuba. However, international cargo vessels from third countries that stop in Cuba are barred from U.S. ports for six months.

Using credit cards
The Treasury Department has paved the way for Americans traveling in Cuba to use credit cards, but most banks have not yet jumped into the business.

Obama and the First Family just stepped off Air Force 1 in Havana.

It is raining pretty hard in Havana, so most of the obligatory greeting pageantry was bypassed.

Still, a very exciting moment in the diplomacy with Cuba.

Raul openly dissed Obama.

Even pissant Cuban Communists (rightfully) piss on Obama's face. He's asked for it, now he gets it.

It has nothing to do with America.

Obama has nothing to do with America.

(Did I mention I've been on the "enemies list" since the 1980's at least?)

Disclaimer: Neither Obama nor Raul Castro has ever asked me for advice.
