Yesterday, Cuba and Venezuela just got hit with more sanctions.

John Bolton, National Security Adviser unveiled a new policy on countries he termed as "the troika of tyranny".

" [the US] will no longer appease dictators and despots near our shores in this hemisphere..

Venezuela and Cuba, will feel the full weight of America's robust sanctions regime."

"This troika of tyranny, this triangle of terror stretching from Havana to Caracas to Managua, is the cause of immense human suffering, the impetus of enormous regional instability, and the genesis of a sordid cradle of communism in the Western Hemisphere."

"These tyrants fancy themselves strongmen and revolutionaries, icons and luminaries."

The new sanctions only serve to exacerbate the US' strained relations with Cuba.   I expect it to get much worse.

I bet Maduro and his cronies don't like it either.

If Cuba wants good relations with the U.S. they could try doing something that we might like. Or at least stop blaming us for the problems of crony socialism in their country. Same for Maduro.

Edit: You know there's still a stench about Cuba because the same regime that sent Che Guevara out to murder people in order to try bring Communism to all of South and Central America is essentially still in power?

The same people who wanted Soviet nuclear missiles so they could nuke America...

CUBA VOTES IN REFERENDUM ON NEW CONSTITUTION

Yesterday, Cubans voted to change the constitution.   7.5 million voters turned out  [81.5% of the electorate ].

The proposed constitution acknowledges for the first time, of a role for private business and cooperatives. It also recognizes private property and adds some new legal rights in criminal cases.  Also some term limits on elected officials.

There is a strong opposition to the revisions because it would bring Cuba closer to a US ideology:

Rosa María Payá,  “the Communist Party is the director of Cuban society forever.”

Cuba’s Communist Party, emphasized that a NO vote on the referendum “defends socialism and the revolution.”

I've read 3 different articles on the referendum.  It's difficult (for me) to understand what it really is.

“They have to understand the message: support for the revolution has eroded. The question is by how much.   It is important to look at what level the discontent reaches.”

To me, this sounds like they just trying to get an idea of how many Cubans are interested in amending the current constitution, which has remained virtually unchanged since its draft in 1976.

It was yes to accept the new constitution and no to retain the old constitution. The new constitution, like the old constitution, leaves the Communist Party in charge. As usual with communist elections, it wasn't really free and fair.

Like the Soviet constitution of old, the "new" constitution has freedom-friendly language on paper that disappears in reality.

The referendum left pro-freedom Cubans in a lose-lose situation. They could either vote NO in an election with a pre-ordained outcome or refuse to participate altogether, giving the regime a lopsided victory either way.
