In Syria, second generation dictator Bashar Assad continues to lose military conscripts as more and more men are fleeing to Europe.

Are these young men guilty of committing acts of treason because Assad owns their bodies either by law or by an unwritten "social contract"?

Thomas Hobbes, who invented the "social contract," later popularized by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, asserted that that all people are obliged to obey all powers-that-be, regardless of whether they claim to rule by divine right, as in Saudi Arabia, or through military force, as in Syria, Egypt, and in many other countries.

"Social contract" always felt more like rationalization than reasoned argument to me.  No one is born with "I am owned" stamped on their ass - that's an invention.

No - a legitimate government might make some arguable clam to your stuff or services, but Assad's government lost any hint of legitimacy when they used chemical weapons, torture, intentional murder of unarmed ppl and more.

I think government is just a thug. It's a respectable thug that does maintain justice rather than kill people arbitrarily.

Yea you can do anything. Just be ready to accept consequences. Just like shops can raise price and you can go to another shops.
