I get tired of hearing "Johnson isn't a libertarian". In my opinion, he's the type of libertarian worth supporting and voting for.

How about "Johnson is a weak libertarian." ?

Don't forget that Johnson told a stunned audience that government should have the power to force the god-fearing baker to bake the gay wedding cake. [March 2016 Stossel Libertarian Debates]

Johnson is a mostly sane and intelligent minarchist who was a very good governor by any standards.

It's easy to get caught in a muddle between the equal rights of gay people and the right to choose who you will have dealings with, and our government (including SCOTUS) has been telling us for a generation or two that if you have a business open to the public, you must serve any of the public that comes into your place of business. This sort of mandate arose because of racial discrimination, mostly in the former slave states where racial discrimination was written into state and local laws for way too long after the War to End Slavery.

He happened to be wrong on the gay wedding cake issue.

Doesn't make him a bad person, but it makes him a poor Libertarian Candidate.

After the final debate (there were 2), John Stossel asked the audience who they thought was the best libertarian candidate.  Most said Austin Petersen was the one they would be comfortable voting for. Some of them mentioned Johnson's alarming position on government intrusion into private business.

The LNC picked Johnson as the LP standard-bearer for his name recognition.

I agree, but it is a very divisive issue, and taking the wrong side (from a strict libertarian standpoint) on one divisive issue does not make anyone a bad candidate.

Who was in the audience? Young libertarians?

Had the audience been a cross-section of America, they would have picked Johnson, which is one reason the LP nominated him, they thought he was a better candidate than Peterson.

This is from Wikipedia:

Political positions

"Petersen has voiced and published his rejection of the non-aggression principle.[75][76][77][78] Petersen describes himself as a minarchist.[79] During his presidential campaign, he maintained that he had a "consistent pro-life ethic," meaning he is both pro-life and anti-death penalty.[9] He opposes the War on Drugs.[11] He is a non-interventionist on most matters of foreign policy[80] and applies a free-market capitalist approach to economics. Petersen advocates for an Ellis Island styled immigration policy with a strict disease check, strict security check, with no quotas. He has expressed he has no fear of open borders, but believes the problems of the welfare state must be addressed first.[81] He is an advocate for the Second Amendment and the right to freedom of association."

Can you find a position that most libertarians might think is "wrong"?

Pro-life (anti-abortion) is pretty controversial too! Obviously Peterson was a bad libertarian candidate. Cry

Hmmm...  I wonder why the audience of the Stossel debate(s) gave Petersen the "win".   Undecided

I wonder why the libertarians choosing a presidential candidate for the Party voted for Johnson? Which "win" was more real?
