Libertarian Reaction to the NFL Players' Protests

My reaction as a libertarian is to look to see whether anyone is initiating force against anyone else.  I don't see any of that at the moment.

So the players are free to get on their knees to protest the nation that made them millionaires.  The owners are free to fire those players if the contracts permit them to.  Or they are free to promote those players as heroes also if that is their choice.

Fans are free to boycott the NFL for doing that which means that the NFL may soon go the way of the Dixie Chicks.

That's freedom for you.  You never know what people will do when they aren't forced to do things.

I think it's a huge distraction from the numerous problems the government has created for us.

I find it fascist and downright disgusting that Trump has the gall to call the players "sons of bitches". That is by far more disturbing than three player kneeling during the National Anthem.

Interesting.  Two questions:

Why is it fascist for a president to express his opinoion?

Are you actually Don_G posting under another name?

I'll wager most of them couldn't even tell you why they take a knee during the national anthem. Many have said it's just a big eff-you to President Trump. But the protest is non-violent and harms no one. It's disgusting because it's meant to be offensive.

Many have argued that football players should be role-models for children and that refusing to stand for the national anthem sends the wrong message.

Parents should be role-models for their children - not disenchanted football players.

I've been surprised at the level of intelligence being demonstrated by the players. Admittedly, it could be that they've chosen their best spokesperson to do the talking. So it seems that at least their rep is quite a bit more intelligent than you.

The real problem you want to ignore is racism in your country and that's why the 'black lives matter' initiative is sorely needed.

Is that because so many of them are Black Americans and you stereotype them as being dumb?

Well just the opposite! They are footbal players (us style) and they receive scholarships to play football. That's got to short change them somewhat in education. And like I said, their spokesman was impressive.

YOu need to understand that we don't make distinctions in Canada based on skin colour. You're simply going to have to accept that!

Compared to the U.S., you have so few people who are not white that skin color wouldn't come up as an issue.  Unless pasty white people think the are smarter than tanned or freckled people.

My life was saved by a specialist who left N.Y. and moved to Canada because he wanted to be able to help people. He was on the first kidney transplant team in the US. He was/is a Sikh from India.

Some time when I get drunk I'll tell you all about it!

Glad to hear it!  He was sorely needed.  I know your low pay scale often makes good doctors stay away from Canada.

If he should ever need treatment himself, hopefully he'll be discreet about his return to the states.
