....if you live in France.  The government will take issue with it because it's a boy's name.  This is an example of a government having too much power.

Wrong in my opinion but probably less harmful than the dictates of US government.

I wasn't making a comparison between countries, just pointing out a silly way in which a government has too much power.

It's a comparison between countries worth talking about.

Is Saudi Arabia more authoritarian than France?

Is it a good thing?

I think Liam is a lovely girls' name.

But yes, only certain names are approved.

Name your kid the wrong thing and they will get taken away.

Making Sci-Fi great again since 2063.

Not taking Jeff seriously until he admits this is animal abuse (which he says should be illegal): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WE-IT7_CaE4

I'd rather live in France than Saudi Arabia.  France may require you to give your daughter a feminine name, but Saudi Arabia has gender apartheid.  Religion mixed into government = big government.

Tell me more about how you see this happening, thanks.

Do you think it can be prevented by forbidding governments from being involved in matters of religion and free association and conscience?

If the government of France has the power to decree that you give your daughter a "feminine" name, do they not also have the power to tell your daughter she's a boy?

Is the government of France now that "progressive"?

I get it Ruby. I should have just said that you're much too preoccupied with bashing government. Sure there are some good reasons from time to time but you maybe shouldn't be making it your whole life.

There's a reason why you and the others are fighting back against government. If you can get over yours then you won't have to try to be a libertarian anymore. Soon I hope because you're wasting your life waiting for the pie in the sky to fall from heaven.

Jeff, separation of church and state is very important.  Look at Muslim countries today and Christian countries centuries ago to see why.

I don't know how much power the French government has, but they have the power to take you to court if you give your girl what is considered a boy's name.
