There is no profit to be made from using a CT scanner on someone who can't pay and doesn't have insurance.

The logical thing to do is have a Nurse check out little Suzie (who fell and bumped her head), make sure her superficial wound has been cleaned and bandaged, check her for obvious signs of concussion and ask her family to keep her in the ER waiting room for a few hours and let someone know if her behavior changes.

But that's not done. The hospital is made liable as soon as she enters the ER if anything at all bad happens to Suzie, so they do a CT scan to protect themselves, then pass the cost of the service on to paying or insured customers, which helps make CT scans more expensive than they should be.

But yes, Doctors and hospitals scam insurance companies, and the easiest one's to scam ore the government insurance companies. Next easiest are big heavily regulated insurance companies that are virtually guaranteed a profit.

thank u jeff for ur wise words the goodest of intentions can lead to a bad outcome

Some people just like to take their misery out on other people.  Easier to do it on the internet where the troll is anonymous, so no consequences.

My boss often walks around with his zipper down, trolling me, but there's nothing I can do about it. It's very embarrassing. It's such a relief when the boss gets on this forum where I can be anonymous, even though he can't be.

I'm all for shaking hands with 'you' Ruby. A long handshake is best! You could get over your hurt and I would, well you know what I do when I get overly excited!

I was Don G. but Craig owns me now.

This is under the libertarian pretense that the hospital would not be obligated to help anyone and everyone that comes to their doorstep.

I don't think that can actually be said to be a libertarian premise...

It has been assumed throughout most of modern history that people were free to offer help if they wanted to and could, but that is was wrong to force people to do things. (Understand, I'm talking about free societies.)

You are really talking about the "progressive" premise that good results can only be had by having "lawmakers" and bureaucrats coerce people into doing good.
