I didn't say that either, Jeff.  I'm saying shaming didn't keep people from engaging in pre-marital sex.
It helped Ruby.

I have memories of the sexual revolution because I lived through it.

It started with the elites. Media began to demand the right to publish and distribute what had always been called pornography, and they did. Sex in Cinema became common, and children were cast in sexual roles based on history, usually. Sometimes based on adventure...

Eighteen year olds were mentioned in the Constitution as eligible to vote, which made them (arguably) legal adults everywhere.

Because of that, colleges abandoned their in loco parentis roles and co-ed dorms followed shortly.

Birth control became easily available to college students, and (just coincidentally) so  did drugs and powerful tribal music. Smiley Smiley Smiley

The Age of Aquarius was proclaimed, and young people were urged to get high, drop out of society and crappity smack.

I don't know it those same types of opportunities and pressures are being applied today or not, but I know lots more pre-teens are having sex and getting pregnant than used to before the sexual revolution...

For the most part, babies starve in places where economic freedom is not allowed and governments control a nations economy.

In free societies, there are compassionate people (who are almost invariably more prosperous than people in controlled societies) who will donate their time and money to see that babies don't starve, even if (or maybe especially if?) the parents of the child are irresponsible.

Then it has the same effect on society as the sexual revolution + welfare.

It rewards irresponsibility.

This moral relativism of yours is exactly what lets government take this freedom, then that freedom, until we have lost them all.

What does?

Compassion?

It can, but if you leave it on a private voluntary basis, it doesn't reward irresponsibility in wholesale fashion as does welfare.

That's why, in general, private action is better than government action, because private crappity smackups are local, while government crappity smackups can be world wide.

You can't have it both ways.

Either sometimes, babies will starve and irresponsibility won't always be rewarded...

...Or the babies will never starve and it's just as bad as welfare.

Some babies will probably always starve (or be tossed in dumpsters and toilets).

Bad government policies have been known (provably) to starve babies by the tens of thousands and send thousands of children into sexual bondage and hard labor and dump picking.

Private charities can't help everybody, but when they fail, it is local, not nationwide.

That says a lot about you boss! You really are quite the charlatan who has bought into Christian dogma that makes everything about sex dirty.

Do you have much libertarian support for thos feelings? I think you do but I don't think they're likely to come out of their closets when I'm here.

Which brings up the point that the sexuality shaming which kept so many people from engaging in irresponsible sexual relations was dependent on religion.  Religion is waning in the West, and will hopefully continue to do so.  People need to be taught to be responsible without the threat of some punishment by an invisible sky daddy.

I agree completely.

The thing that gave religion the power to do this - make people responsible - was the false promise of a good afterlife for good behaviour, and the threat of a bad afterlife for bad behaviour.

Perhaps one day, society will be structured in such a way as to give an actual reward for good behaviour, and punish the bad.

If we want this to happen with the free market, everyone has to understand that giving even voluntary charity to people for being irresponsible is unsustainable.

You're always missing the concept of 'social responsibility'. You must eventually come around to understanding that as long as there is a need for helping irresponsible people, it will continue.

The answer is eliminating the need and the ways we can go about doing that. But bear in mind that the need will never go away completely.

Some success is better than no success. Americans don't want to understand and accept that, and it results in them having to open their wallets to pay for their attitudes.

Health care, the prison system, and on and on.

You're a clever kid Oppo and I see some real indications that you're trying to break free of the ball and chain that is the American way. If you can get over your hurt you're feeling for me then we'll be able to make some real progress.

You and my boss are the only real hopes here on this forum. Not including Tom who has already arrived to some extent. He just needs some fine tuning.

Mostly only by religious people, but lots of the shaming was done by peers of the girls who got pregnant or slept around. "Good" girls shunned them and called them sluts. Some boys called them sluts and sought them out.

How about we settle for calling them stupid, and after they are adults, let them do what they want... But stop paying them more every time they have another baby!
