Trump is not going to make any peaceful progress with Putin.

I'm hopeful that Trump will be able to get some concessions from Putin.

Obama already did that and look what it got him on the Syria question.

I agree that Putin will not ever give up Syria.

The Russian naval facility in Tartus is Putin's gateway to the Mediterranean.  It simply has too much strategic value. He won't ever let that go.

But there are different areas where Trump's deal-making skills might be successful.

If France doesn't want any U.S. presence in France (including whatever nukes we might have there), they can tell us to leave.

If Poland wants us to have a military presence in Poland, including whatever nukes we might have there, what business is it of Germany?

I think a scheduled pullout of our military from Europe is a great idea. So does Russia. But many European countries don't, because they fear Putin's intentions.

Let them prepare for whatever they decide to do.
