Typically, the salaries of professionals are directly proportional to the money spent on obtaining the college degree required to practice in the profession.

A Doctor will always make more than an engineer.

A Lawyer will always make more than a teacher.

The 1950s was the last decade before people went into a rat-race profession to make a lot of money.

All the professionals I know chose their profession for the money.

I'm sure plenty of people choose their careers because they have passion for those fields.  I just wish I was one of them.

It depends on who you are working for, how long you have worked, how good you are at your work and how much you work.

A brand new lawyer trying to start up a private practice might make almost nothing, while a senior professor at a prestigious university might make quite a lot.

A brand new Doctor trying to start up a private practice might make almost nothing, while a senior engineer in R&D for a major corporation might make quite a lot.

An ambitious plumber might make more than a lot of doctors and lawyers.

People mostly don't get paid for just existing, but that doesn't mean other people don't value them. I value my friends and family, but I don't pay them a salary or wages.
