When schools were under local control, run by local school boards and parents/teachers in PTAs, undisciplined children were taught to discipline themselves, often by disciplining them. Almost everybody thought this was essential to the educational process. Teachers removed disruptive children from their classrooms and sent them to the principals office, where they were often disciplined and then sometimes sent home. It worked pretty well for almost all children.

In the early days of Michigan's public schools, children were not admitted to the schools until they knew how to read. I think that's a great idea.

So if one has illiterate parents, one is doomed to multi-generational illiteracy?

You didn't read the article I linked to where the creator of ADHD admitted it was a fabricated "disorder"?

I sure did, but just for laughs.

What happened in Michigan in days of old was that an older sibling who had already learned would teach a child to read, or a neighbor, or someone from their church, but there was not much illiteracy at the time.

It's a hoot alright!

From your linked article-

"...in 1902. British pediatrician Sir George Still described “an abnormal defect of moral control in children.”

Moral control? And they claim to be talking about the same problem?

That was how they talked in 1902, Jeff.

The article lends the lie to your claim that we mind scientists invented ADHD and convinced MD's to start prescribing medication for it.

Labeling the natural behavioral patterns of some children as "defects of moral control" isn't substantially different from labeling the same behavior as a "mental disorder".

ADHD (with it's changeable list of "symptoms") is a label for the normal behavior patterns of some children.

Almost all children can be taught to control themselves with time and some effort. (Some are more difficult than others, a very few are impossible.) That's what socialization and schooling are all about, teaching children to respect the rights of others, which necessarily involves learning self-control and responsibility.

Interesting.

Would you say that your own pattern of behavior on this forum is "normal?"

Also, how do you feel about me asking that question?

It's normal for me, although I hold back a bit so as not to offend the innocent women and children too much...

I don't have any feelings for you Red. Sorry if that hurts your feelings... Cheesy

You should read section 2a of this biography. It's not very long, but if you can understand what Popper is saying, maybe we can talk further...
