What do you have when the people no longer have a voice in their government? China? Venezuela?

Those are countries with some of the highest tax rates in the world.  The tax rates make a lot more difference to their citizens' lives than whether they can pick their leaders.

The democratic base of republican government in the U.S. is the Democratic and the Republican parties...
They are not. That's a pernicious lie. The people allowed to choose representatives in free and fair elections (fair meaning without interference by Party/Government cronyism) are the democratic base of any legitimate government. Without that base, no government can be said to be of a republican form.

You don't see the connection between authoritarian government and the government sucking the blood out of the people?

If the people have no voice in government, there is no way for them to limit taxation.
