Plural of Lowlife?

I was telling my wife about one of the tax-hungry posters on here and she referred to people like him as "a bunch of lowlives."

I thought, 'lowlives?' Wouldn't it be "lowlifes?"

Spellcheck agrees with me, but Mrs. Sack is rarely wrong.

Anyone have a reference for that?

I would say lowlifes.

It's one word now - a noun. It is no longer the word life. It has its own plural.

I had a similar conversation with my beloved about the word foods. Food is already plural, right? "Look at all that food!"

Well, to emphasise that there are a lot of choices, perhaps at a feast for Henry the Eighth in Medieval England, or at a buffet, you can say, "Look at all those foods."

All of the languages on your planet have these weird little quirks. I would say English and its adding S onto things for various reasons is almost top of the list.

I'm not a fan of languages where inanimate objects have to have gender, though. That creeps me out.

This moral relativism of yours is exactly what lets government take this freedom, then that freedom, until we have lost them all.

She might prefer to just use "scum"?
