One Important Problem with Democracy: Voters are Stupid

Voters in Texas will turn out in a caravan to vote for Beto O'Rourke for no other reason than his first name which sounds vaguely spanish.  His real name is Robert Francis O'Rourke; a more Irish name would be hard to imagine.  He's been playing the "my latino friends called me Beto" card to win three congressional terms and now has a legitimate chance at becoming a Senator having accomplished zero as a congressman.

He's running against Ted Cruz, who actually is Hispanic, but that don't bother Beto none.  He defeated a well-established latino Democrat to win the primary and then a well-established Latino Republican to become congressman from El Paso.  All it takes is yard signs that say "Beto."

When someone asks me who I'm voting (it's always a Democrat that asks), I say, "the Hispanic guy.  Texas shouldn't have two white Senators."  Often they say, "I think he's like half-spanish, half Irish or something."

Yeah.  Those are the people I want taking my money by force because they know better what to do with it than I do.

My Voter Proficiency Exam solves this problem.

Votes from half of the electorate (the dumb half) would not be counted.

I don't know anybody that votes for race or ethnicity.

Anyway, it's not the voters who have power to tax you, it's Congress.

Are you claiming that the candidates are all elite genius experts? Grin

Surely most of them are at least as stupid as the average voter, and way stupider than a plurality of the voters.

Can I be the judge of who is stupid and shouldn't have their vote counted?

Seriously, who would make the judgement? I don't like your test. I don't want to use an IQ test either.

I have a better idea than either, but I'll never get to judge, so it doesn't matter. Cry

No,  Neither one of us could be objective enough to judge that.

But you *might* be selected to decide which questions will be on the Voter Proficiency Exam!   Smiley

I can be just as nonobjective when creating a test full of cleverly designed questions.

I'd be OK with using the test you have to pass to become a U.S. citizen (or used to have to pass anyway), but I don't think that test will ever be used as a requirement test for voting.

How *might* I be chosen to help select the test questions?

Not really, because you would be one member of a committee tasked with drafting the Exam.  Once other members of the committee realized you're a sneaky snake, you'd likely be kicked off the committee.

You'd be nominated by a non-partisan election committee.

Keep in mind that the "Exam" is only 4 or 5 questions.  Each voter will know the questions BEFORE they vote, so they'd have plenty of time to research the correct answers.

here are a couple of sample questions:

What are the 3 branches of government?

a)  Legislative, Judicial, and Financial
b)  Financial, Labor, and Entitlements
c)  Legislative, Executive, and Judicial
d)  Energy, Trade, and Foreign Affairs

What are the functions of Congress?

a)  Allocate Taxes and Confirm jurists on the Supreme Court
b)  Oversee the House of Representatives and suggest replacements.
c)  Make Laws and conduct investigations to oversee the Executive Branch.
d)  Oversee the IRS and Protect the Bill of Rights.

The idea is, in the process of researching the questions, they become more informed voters!!     Smiley

Then you don't get out much.  We had a president elected for two terms based on nothing more than his race.  That was the year that another candidate was supposed to be elected based on nothing more than her gender.

Is that supposed to be an argument in favor of taxes?

Again, is that your argument in support of taxation?

This is another example of you being cloistered. I tried to tell you that the PC Police are getting people fired at every turn and you ridiculed me for it, while being like, "That's not a problem! I've never heard of that. Those people don't have that much power. You must be imagining things."

The rest of us actually have to participate in the market to live, or at least have had to within the last couple of decades.

You're completely out of touch, and you're so quick to ridicule people for things you know nothing about anymore that I have this mental picture of telling you that your planet has six (culturally seven) continents and you go, "Lol shows what you know! HAHAHAHAHA! There's ONE continent and it's called Pangea! You think I'd believe they split apart? You must be stuuuuupid! Why should I trust a Vulcan about how many continents Earth has? I think I know how many continents my own planet has. Go back home, filthy illegal alien!"

This moral relativism of yours is exactly what lets government take this freedom, then that freedom, until we have lost them all.

Who picks the committee? What's to prevent them from stacking the committee with people like me?
