'Spartacus' Announces New Wealth Redistribution Scheme
Oct 23rd, 2018 at 2:33pm
Print Post
Presidential hopeful Cory Booker proposes giving poor children as much as $50k EACH to pay for homes and college.

Here's how it works:   Low-income children would each get a $1,000 grant when they are born. Money could grow in government-managed accounts, with annual deposits of up to $2,000, on an income-based sliding scale.

"It would be a dramatic change in our country to have low-income people break out of generational poverty."

This is just another poorly thought-out plan to redistribute wealth at taxpayer's expense.  Thankfully, it's so ridiculous, it will never come to fruition.

I read about it.

The best way to get the benefit is to use the "pre-existing condition" loophole when you want to cash out and use "your" money for whatever. Smiley

Don't make the mistake of working and earning money on your own, that will make you ineligible and you won't get shit...

It's not a good plan.

It's not a good plan.

I'll bet Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would support it.  Probably Bernie, too.

They believe that the best method to lift people out of poverty is with government hand-outs.

In fact,  government hand-outs only make a bad situation worse.  Government hand-outs make people reliant on the government.

China has a different "progressive" plan, re-educate people who need it and give them job training!

"Vocational education and training centres".  It sounds harmless enough.

But these are actually detainment camps that are run more like jails than schools.

Just what we should expect in a communist country.

I'll wager that North Koreas "Vocational education and training centres" are even worse.

Thinking more about Booker's scheme, it occurred tome that "government managed accounts" wil be like the Social Security "trust fund", that is, the money won't really be there, and when the time comes for the payout, it will have to come from whoever is paying taxes at the time.

Also, I can't imagine why Booker or anybody else thinks this will break the "generational cycle of poverty" when all this doesn't seemed to have worked-

    Early Head Start;
    Enhanced Early Head Start with Employment Services;
    Head Start;
    Even Start Family Literacy Program;
    21st Century Community Learning Centers;
    Abstinence Education;
    Upward Bound;
    Food Stamp (renamed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP) Employment and Training Program;
    Welfare-to-Work;
    Employment Retention and Advancement (ERA) Project;
    Building Strong Families (BSF);
    Supporting Healthy Marriage;
    Moving to Opportunity;
    Section 8 Housing Vouchers;
    Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) programs;
    Unemployment Insurance Self-Employment Demonstrations;
    Project GATE (Growing America Through Entrepreneurship);
    Job Corps;
    JOBSTART;
    Center for Employment Training (CET) Replication; and
    Quantum Opportunity Program Demonstration.

If the poorest 51% voted through their representatives to have Booker's scheme paid for by the wealthiest 10% would you have any valid moral objection?

Yes, and legal objections as well.

Once I've helped the people in my community to pay for a basic education for every child in the community, I feel my obligation to support those now young men and women has ended. I don't consider anything beyond what passes for a high school education these days to be "basic" education.

Is your moral objection based on the natural right to own property?

Where did that obligation to support those now young men and women come from in the first place?

If the community can vote you an obligation to pay for primary and secondary education why can they not vote you an obligation to pay for college and vocational training beyond high school?

What about remedial post-secondary education for the large fraction of people who graduate unable to read their own diplomas thanks to the wonderfulness of your beloved public schools?

All three of those types of post-secondary education benefit the community so why can't the community assign you that obligation also?

Explain how you have one obligation but not the other?
