My state does charge to register my vehicles.

I'm sure private companies would be glad to do the same for a fee, but having the DMV do it provides a unified statewide registry that is accessible to law enforcement people all over the country, and stolen vehicle reports to one police agency are accessible to all.

Possibly some private business would be created to establish a statewide registry combining the registrations done by competing private companies, but I expect that a private investigator you hired to find your stolen vehicle would have to pay to access the records of the statewide company (actually companies, because there would have to be competing vehicle registration companies to get the benefits of market forces)...

What would prevent me from stealing your car and registering it with a private company on the other side of the state? How would they know that you had already registered it with some other company? What would motivate them to try to discover if it was already registered to someone else and therefore refuse to take my proffered registration fee?

Tel me how you think private vehicle registration would work, thanks.

First tell me all about the benefits of vehicle registration?  Are they the same as gun registration?  What are these awesome benefits that if the government stopped requiring registration, there would be a big demand for private registration?

For example, under the current "register your car or else" system, my car gets stolen, taken to a chop shop and its parts are distributed to various crooked junk yards, mechanics and radio installers. But. . . I have my registration!

What now?

The only one I can think of is it makes it easy to prove a vehicle really belongs to you.

If your stolen car gets parted out, you won't get it back no matter what.

You’ve paid registration feels year after year for decades and you’re only now wondering what your benefit is?

So you favor enforced registration of all valuable property?  My wife has a family ring worth much more than any of our vehicles.  Should she be required to pay an annual fee for that?

Right.

If there were any real benefit to registering my vehicle, government would feel no need to force me to pay for it.

I wasn't wondering, you asked.

I think there is a real benefit, and I don't think private registration would work.

The good news is, if you drive your car only on private roads, you don't have to register it. Smiley

What you should be working towards is all private roads.

What's the real benefit?

Or government roads paid for by tolls.

You said, "The only one I can think of is . . . "

So you were thinking of it after I asked.  If you're stuck on the word "wondering" for some reason fine.

Point is that year after year you pay the registration fees and never thought about getting any benefit from it until I prompted you.

That's how government grows.  When we just do what they say without thinking about it.

It makes it easy to prove it's your car. I told you that already.

You'll still have to register your car to drive it on government owned roads, even if they charge tolls on top of the taxes you paid to build and maintain them.
