Will Turkey and Russia come to some sort of agreement to partition Syria after the Kurds are all killed?

Where is the UN on this issue? They don't seem to mind genocide much these days...

As long as Assad is in power, a United Nations Security Council mandate will not be granted by either Russia or China.

Both Russia and China have geostrategic (Tartus Naval Base) and economic reasons to keep NATO out of Syria.

NATO intervention in Syria would tie the Alliance down for years to come, sapping its political and military energy.  It would simply be too costly.

Trump says Turkey and the US are going to increase their trade ties as a result of the troop withdrawal from Syria.  Good!

The US never should have intervened in the first place.   It was Obama's mistake to deploy US troops to Syria in 2015.

China has a strategic interest in Syria?

Since it looks like China is interested in a world empire, I guess they have strategic interests everywhere...

Once the Kurdish genocide is accomplished, both in Syria and in Southern Turkey/Northern Iraq, Turkey will be happy anyway. Cry

Most definitely.   Basically it boils down to infrastructure and reconstruction projects for China.

read about the details here:

What it looks like to me is that China's planned economy is failing, so they are cracking down on dissent and the free flow of information and getting ready to go to war so the Communist Party can stay in power.

You're pointing out that China has "strategic interests" in Africa (and elsewhere).   Clearly, they do.

China has strategic interests elsewhere, too.

We need to keep an eye on them!

Devaluation of the US dollar will help.

Federal Reserve bank will make it happen!!

You can count on them!!  Smiley     Smiley

Doesn't the U.S. also have strategic interests?

Back in your reply #10 you said-

"There is no reason to deploy US troops to meet political goals."

How about deploying troops to satisfy strategic interests?

Of course we do.  The US has nearly 800 military bases/installations around the globe!

However, only a small percentage of those are actually necessary.    Probably less than a dozen or so.

That's a huge waste of military assets.   There should only be "boots on the ground" in places where the US has commercial interests that are under threat of attack from hostile nations (for instance, US-owned oil rigs).

Koch Industries owns many oil rigs in Alberta (Canada).   But they're not under attack, so we certainly don't need to deploy troops there.

ExxonMobil, BP and Shell still have oil fields in Iraq, but the UN resolution which allowed US Military occupation forces to be in Iraq expired SIX YEARS AGO.  No new resolution was drafted.   So the US military forces occupying Iraq are unsanctioned (illegal).

So some overseas military bases and deployments are necessary for strategic interests, and others (sometimes) to protect American economic interests...

I don't give a whit about UN authorization for the U.S. sending troops anywhere. All I care about is things like "were our two wars against Iraq Constitutional?"
