You’re just flat wrong about that. Cite any law that makes libel or slander a crime.
Did you not look at this list:

https://www.freedomforuminstitute.org/about/faq/which-types-of-speech-are-not-pr...

    Obscenity
    Fighting words
    Defamation (including libel and slander)
    Child pornography
    Perjury
    Blackmail
    Incitement to imminent lawless action
    True threats
    Solicitations to commit crimes

You don't recognize that those are crimes in most instances? Not even perjury or blackmail?

Agreed.  Nowhere in Jeff's list did it say those things were "crimes,"
You also didn't know that perjury and blackmail are crimes? Not even true threats or incitement to commit crimes?

Wow!

Perjury and blackmail are crimes.

Just because libel and slander are on a list with perjury and blackmail on a website doesn't make them crimes also.  The web site doesn't claim they are.

Who does?

So I'm curious.  All this time you could have debated like a normal person, and you just chose not to?

The law.

https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/defamation-law-made-simple-29718.html

Torts are civil wrongs. They may result in punishment. Contrasting them to criminal wrongs is not a way to make them legal.

Edit: This is an instance where I am ignoring the technical legal definitions differentiating between "torts" and "crimes" and calling them all crimes, which is not strictly correct, because accidental damage can be a tort but not a crime... I just consider that if the damage is intentional, it's a crime. Smiley

It seems normal to you now, because it is Jeff I am easily besting in a debate.  So you are able to use the logical part of your brain.  When it is you I am besting in an argument, you get emotional and then the more primitive part of your brain takes over and logic no longer seems normal to you.

My God, you are a chick.  Lighten up, drama queen.

Thanks for letting me know you're winning though.  Otherwise there's no indication of that.

So seriously, Don, have you noticed you always know someone knows they aren't doing well when they have to start crowing about their prowess?  That's when you know even they realize it isn't evident in their arguments

Jeff, did you ever get around to answering this:

Should the school district spend about a hundred extra to get that emotionally disturbed kid glasses that he will wear and therefore has a fair chance at a basic education or be stubborn and refuse and insist that the little ingrate take the glasses we know that he won't wear and therefore let go to waste the hundreds of thousands of dollars already spent trying to educate him?

This is what I’ve been saying often.  You make up your own definitions for things and then get mad when others use the standard definition.

It’s a very common trait among people on the AU spectrum.

Well, everything else on the list is a crime, and if defamation isn't, it's at least a punishable civil wrong. You can be forced to pay monetary damages, and paying fines is a common penalty for many crimes. The fact that the monetary penalty is fixed for a crime and open ended for a defamation suit does make them different in the law.
