Voluntary Giving at HEB

HEB is a Texas based grocery chain.  As part of some NFL promotion of fighting hunger, they put an old school paper bag of groceries, pre-loaded with "someone's next meal" and offered customers a chance to buy one as they checked out so it could be donated.  The cashiers had plastic cowbell noisemakers and there were "cheerleaders" at the front of the store who would "woo-hoo" when ever anyone bought one.  They hardly went more than ten seconds between cheers.

People got caught up in it even though the cheerleaders weren't hotties in shorties but just a couple of very average women wearing jeans and Texans jersey.

My point?

It is possible to raise money voluntarily for social causes such as feeding the poor and educating children.  But you have to have the energy to promote and fundraise.  Once the guns come into the equation, people get lazy in that they rely on them instead of initiative and greedy in that pointing guns at people to extort money doesn't seem to have a point of diminished returns. (It does, but people don't realize it).

Snarky no more!

American's give more than $400 billion a year to charities now, but you are correct, if they weren't paying 50% of what they earned in taxes, they'd give a lot more.

Libertarians already know this.

Yes, we do.  It's good that you pointed it out, though.    Smiley
