Liechtenstein is a tiny country in central Europe  - population 37,000 citizens  -

area = 61 square miles.

per capita income of about $100,000

corporate flat tax of 12.5%

income tax of just 1.2%

form of government:  Monarchy.  Head-of-State is Prince Hans-Adams II

Does not have a military

Prince Hans-Adams II is the author of a book The State in the Third Millennium wher he extols the virtues of Free mind, Free Markets, Individual Liberty, and minimalist government.

Arguably the most libertarian country in existence today. (aside from Greenland - but Greenland is not a country)

It sounds less wonderfully libertarian when you read things like this:

I actually look at the minimum standards for immigrants as a plus!  Keeps out the riff-raff   Smiley

Liechtenstein requires immigrants to speak German.

The U.S. requires its citizens to speak English.

In France, immigrants seeking citizenship must speak French.

Brithish immigrants must demonstrate they can speak English to get citizenship.

Most countries have a National "official" language.  This is not at all unusual.

Right. It's basically a tyranny that happens to grant its people a lot of practical, usable freedom.

Not that I wouldn't want to live there of course. It sounds like a great place to live.

The only problem is that it's a lot less libertarian than people make out.

This moral relativism of yours is exactly what lets government take this freedom, then that freedom, until we have lost them all.

I agree with you, but I'm not sure such things have anything to do with libertarian ideas of utopia.

The fact that there's an Income Tax in Liechtenstein precludes it from being a utopia.  But like i said in the OP,  this place is arguably the most libertarian country in the world today.

Can you think of an other country which is more libertarian than Liechtenstein?

If not, which country could be #2?

Yes, income taxes are a terrible way to tax.  The temptation to politicians to play on wealth envy is just too great

I don't think Lichtenstein's form of government is very libertarian at all. They might currently be governing in ways that seem to protect individual rights and liberty, but I'm not sure the government is required to do that.

The link you provided says very little makes no mention of the strong libertarian values or policies of the head-of-state, prince Hans-Adam II.

Liechtenstein has the highest percentage of foreign-born citizens of any country in the world.

That's a clue about libertarianism right there.

"It seems to me that the original idea of the European Union was to create a 'United States of Europe'.  I think that is not going to be realized.  On the political side, it's probably going to move backwards [after BREXIT]."  -  Prince Hans-Adam II
