18 Year US Intervention In Afghanistan Has Failed - It's Time To Leave

The Neocons would love to stay there until 2035.   How they love open-ended wars!

At this point, it's time to admit that the US should withdraw, after we spent over $19 Trillion and tens of Thousands of US troops have been killed or injured.

In fact, the number is so high, that it's impossible (for me) to find the actual current figures.

In 2011, the official number of US casualties was 6,200 dead and nearly 50,000 wounded.

Certainly, 8 years later, those numbers have increased significantly.

Didn't Trump promise to bring the troops home during his 2016 campaign?   No matter.  Let's not count on him to fulfill campaign promises.

Like Vietnam, the war in Afghanistan has been a complete and utter failure, and the "war on terror" cannot be "won".

Time to pack up our stuff and admit defeat.  It's Pointless to spend more taxpayer's money or (more importantly) lose any more military personnel.

The situation there is worsening:

"Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) said the monthly average of enemy-initiated attacks increased by 19% from November 2018 through January 2019 compared to between August to October 2018."

Well said.

My sons watch the 9/11 attack on the news when they were children.  Then both of them served as infantrymen in Afghani-land as they called it.  One of them saw his good friend and squad leader blown up on their very first patrol.  The oldest one is pushing thirty but that asinine “war” that started when he was a kid still goes on.

Enough is enough and this has been well over enough.

Neo-Cons have controlled our foreign policy for the last 18 years? Are you sure?

My neighbor's last foster child just joined the Marines because he wants to go somewhere and fight people or kill people or both... But I guess Afghanistan isn't his only option.

I think some President ordered the U.S. to stay in Afghanistan until terror is eradicated from the world, and that mission has not yet been accomplished. Cry

Controlled?  Maybe not controlled.

Certainly influenced.

Pentagon war hawks had plans to invade the Middle East long before the Sept 11 attacks. This was the plan back in 1994!

They had even mapped out the targets:  Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan & Iran.

(Pentagon) General Wesley Clark (retired) tells interviewer Amy Goodman all about it here:

Well, somebody must have decided to keep our war going in Afghanistan for the past 18 years... Is it a game like football, where the Neo-Cons keep things going for a while, then hand off to the Progressives, who later relinquish control of the war to the Neo-Cons again? Cheesy

Edit: People in the Pentagon are supposed to plan for wars, why else have them?

The US was not at war with ANY of these countries in 1994.   Angry

The Pentagon was initially intended to be a centralized command center to house the Army, Navy and Air Force in WW II.   So yes, at that time the Pentagon was war-planning.

In 1994, the US was not at war, so there was no reason for the Pentagon to be planning one seven.

As far as I know, the U.S. Congress hasn't declared war on anybody since we entered WWII...

You don't adhere to the premise that the best way to prevent wars is to be prepared for them?

That's not what happened, Jeff.

They weren't preparing for a war - they were manufacturing one.

Seven, in fact.
