Governments no different from organized crime.  Everyone has to "kick up."

They have to pay their share for the police protection provided by the Sheriff's Dept. and their share for the county court and county jail.

I know you don't think they should have any of those things available to them, but they do.

It's only 4 miles from Ninland, and there are lots of small communities to the south and southwest... That's probably where the tiger will head when it gets loose.

Bottom line is that in Slab City, anything goes.

Government leaves them alone.

Except for the Bureau of Land Management - they're trying to extort money from Slab City residents.

The residents have no intentions of paying the $8 grand per year "usage" fees.

Slab City "elders" discuss the spectre of BLM coercion:  (skip to 3:47)

There probably are, but they would not be enforced.

As Slab City is in the middle of a desert, Diamondback rattlers and scorpions are a far more tangible threat to residents' safety than tigers.

Probably more of a danger to the neighbour's dog than my tiger too. Somehow I think a cat can look after itself, but a dog will just bite whatever and die.

People often eat rattlers when they pose a danger to pets.

I made one into a pet.

It didn't do much of anything.

Anyway, on the face of it, the usage fee sounds fairly innocuous, right?

Well, it would kill the community. If money is going out, and no money is coming in, collapse ensues.

Taxed communities must have:

1. Enough welfare recipients to serve to offset taxes
2. Tourism
3. A major industry

...Communities which are untaxed may simply serve each other sustainably.

This moral relativism of yours is exactly what lets government take this freedom, then that freedom, until we have lost them all.

What sort of evidence do you have for this assertion?

You tried to imply earlier that the Sheriff's office wouldn't send a patrol car out even if someone called in a complaint, which I think is BS.

Of course you also try to imply that the "anything" that goes on in Slab City is all innocuous and that no one ever violates anyone else's rights, which is completely unbelievable.

Yeah, we think maths is functional. Imagine that.

Is that proper sentence structure on Vulcan?

Slab City is a libertarian community that works just fine without government intrusion.

BIG GOVERNMENT statists just need to deal with it.

Nobody claimed that Slab City is the "model libertarian community".  I'm saying that it IS a libertarian community where everybody minds their own business, and respects the rights of their neighbor without government intrusion.  They don't NEED municipal codes or law enforcement.

And except for the BLM extortion, there is no government interference in Slab City.

Most people are like that, more so in small communities than in "progressive" big cities.

Whatever their needs, they have the County Sheriffs and legal system to call on.

This keeps violation of rights to a minimum.

Believe it or not, some people don't think like libertarians, and sometimes it pays to have a way to hold them accountable for their violations of rights, something better than lynching or shootouts in the streets.

The government doesn't interfere in my neighborhood unless someone calls the Sheriff's office or 911, and my taxes are lower than their BLM fees...

Maybe they should have thought twice about squatting on "Federal Land"?
