Whatever their needs, they have the County Sheriffs and legal system to call on.

Yes, yes. . .  the Sheriff has legal authorization to intervene.

But they DON'T.    And that's my point.

Because they don't NEED to.

The residents of Slab City easily manage to maintain the peace WITHOUT government intrusion.

It's an awkward situation, yes.

Because it raises the question "Why can Slab City manage just fine without government intervention, but the rest of the country CAN'T???"

It's awkward.  But a good reason to start asking "WHY can't the rest of the country do this, too?"

Most places are like that most of the time, and part of the reason is the implicit threat of the law, the knowledge that if you violate the rights of others, you can and will be prosecuted. That threat exists in Slab City. It is not an anarchic place.

You are trying mightily to create the impression that there is a connection between the lack of a 'city' government and the lack of crime, but the U.S. is full of unincorporated communities with no town government, and they are for the most part just as peaceful as Slab City.

If the criteria for identifying a "libertarian" community is a lack of local government and a lack of crime, rural America is covered with "libertarian" communities.

What's different about Baltimore or Chicago or Detroit or New York City?

Golly, the only difference I see is that those big cities have "progressive" local governments and have had them for generations... And of course the state and federal governments are much more involved in those cities than they are in Slab City...

I guess that proves it, "progressive" government causes crime!

I never said (or implied) that crime doesn't exist in Slab City.   Slab City has crime.  But the residents deal with it much differently than a government-controlled "Rule of Law" community.

If its a victimless crime, they simply ignore it.

If there IS a victim, the community pulls together and helps the victim rebuild, or recover the stolen property.

In some extreme cases, they may banish the perp from Slab City.

Libertarianism is a philosophy - it's not a form of government.  It is based on individual rights, and the non aggression principle.

If you're saying that there are other libertarian communities out there, great!

List them here and let's find out how they make libertarianism work in their community!

That is assault, and a very serious crime in Slab City.

The town elders would probably banish the person(s) who committed the act.

Town Elders? How does one get to be a Town Elder of Slab City?

BTW, what make's you think of rape as a group activity? Are you a sociopath?

Naturally, you need to be old.  How old, I'm not sure.   In the video I linked in a previous post, there is a meeting of the "elders".  They look to be around 50 and up.

Heavens, no.     I'm no sociopath.

It's possible that rape can be a group activity.   Thus, the (s).    Wink

Are they elected? Does consent of the governed exist? What powers do the elders have? Besides being able to banish people that is...

No.
An "Elder" must:
1) be old.
2) be a permanent resident of Slab City or a certain amount of time (unknown).

Quote:
Does consent of the governed exist?
Doesn't need to.  Because nobody is "governed". (in my understanding)The Council of Elders plays a judiciary role only.  Think of them as a mini "Supreme Court"

Quote:

That's basically it.  They have the power to banish evildoers.  There is no Jail in Slab City, so serious offenders are banished.

Its interesting to note that is exactly how Liberland would deal with the most serious criminals - they would simply banish them.  There are no jails or prisons in Liberland, either.

One of the Elders told a story about a banished offender who returned to Slab City.  Apparently "Someone" burned down the man's trailer when he was away foraging for supplies.   Then the Elder winked at the camera.   Wink
