Worst Influences in Human History

I would list them as:

1 - Socialism.  Responsible for hundreds of millions of outright murders, along with untold early deaths due to mismanagement of economies and suffering due to loss of personal and political freedoms.

2 - Anti-semitism.  Responsible for millions of outright murders and relentless persecution for thousands of years.  However . . .  it was socialism which allowed anti-semitism to be the expressed through mechanized mass killing.  Perhaps without socialism, anti-semitism might be just another recurring tribalist conflict.

5-Slavery.  Not a product of socialism, but clearly an outgrowth of statism.  No one can own another person without a government to recognize that ownership.

4 - Cigarette smoking.  I include this one because it does so much damage for so little good.  I never met a smoker who enjoyed it.  I can't lay this one on socialism.    Cigarette smoking came about when cigar factory workers began rolling tobacco shavings in papers and smoking them.  They inhaled them and quickly became addicted.   Owners saw a bonanza in this.  Profit motivated big tobacco to hide the addictiveness of their product while marketing it to teenagers.

0. Humans

Actually though, the first three of your four can be reduced to some people believing they have the right to control others.

The fourth I would personally expand to include all addiction, including the addictive properties of emotion itself. Most people who do terrible things on a regular basis are, I would argue, chemical addicts. Do a thing. Dopamine rush. Do said thing again.

This moral relativism of yours is exactly what lets government take this freedom, then that freedom, until we have lost them all.

I nominate progressivism for number 5.

It began as a movement in the late 1890s.

By 1909, progressivism had a firm foothold in American politics.

Woodrow Wilson championed progressivism with passage of the Revenue Act of 1913 (Underwood Tariff).

They needed to amend the Constitution to clear the path for the Revenue Act, so in 1909, the 16th Amendment was passed by Congress.

This gave Congress (government) the POWER to "lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment."

The second dumbest, most idiotic Amendment in the history of the Unites States. (the dumbest of all time was Amendment XVIII, which was subsequently repealed)

The states stupidly ratified it.  The government now had power to take a citizen's wealth and property by coercion.

The decline in personal liberty and freedom that followed was inevitable.

In their history, jews have been thrown out of 109 places.  Now if a woman has dated 109 men and dumped by all of them what do you think the problem is?

The rest of what you say is probably all true but I am one person who LOVES smoking.  I smoke real cigs and electronic and have smoked since 16.  I smoke a minimum of 30 cigs a day an this is part of the reason why I like being in Asia so much, you can smoke everywhere here including indoors.

I don't think those two things equate. I do think what's happening in South Africa equates because the native population tends to get pissy when foreigners move in and end up vastly more wealthy and successful.

And I like caffeine. If you take away everything positive out of life, it wouldn't be worth living no matter how many minutes and seconds you might gain from it.

I support letting each person find their own balance.

Cigarettes are highly addictive and very deadly but they don't change behaviour.

The first three are good choices. Number four isn't even in the running.

Nicotine is highly addictive. Cigarettes can have bad effects on your health, but calling them "very deadly" is hyperbole.

Interesting.

What, if anything, would be your fourth choice?

Some of the native American tribes kept slaves, and they had nothing resembling government. Slaves were also kept by some tribes in the Middle East, and those tribes had no governments. Individuals have kidnapped people and kept them as sex slaves, even if their government forbid it.

At least you got the "recognize" part correct in this instance. Smiley
