Interesting.

What, if anything, would be your fourth choice?

Probably religion, although I might put it higher than fourth... I'll also qualify that by saying religion has also been one of the best influences in human history.

And what do you think about the rest of it? That religion has also been one of the best influences in human history?

Perhaps ironically, I think the most religious person would agree.  Because most very religious people claim that their belief system is not a religion, but rather the one true path or the like.  I might have put Islam specifically at number 4, but that might be a bit contemporary centric.

Good post!

Not organised religion.

Organised religion has been the cause of much misery, suffering, Wars, and death.

In one religion, A father may murder his own daughter if it is discovered that she dated or had relations with a Jewish boy.  This is called an "Honor" killing and it is permitted in some cultures.

It's unthinkable that a religion expects a father to murder his own child.

Barbaric.

It was barbarian tribes that created that expectation...

Why would you expect barbaric tribes to come up with civilized ideas? Cheesy

Maybe they got the idea from God, who commanded Abraham to murder his son, Isaac.

In the story, God tells Abraham to murder his son as a sacrifice.   Abraham grudgingly agrees to do it, and raises a broad-knife to smite the young lad who is tied to a makeshift altar of stone and twigs.

Then God says ! STOP!  Do not kill your son.. . . . I just wanted to make sure you fear me!

Can you imagine how terrified the boy was?

Why would anyone worship a God who torments his followers?

What a barbaric God.     Angry    No wonder God's followers are barbaric, too.

It even predates the God of Abraham.

I think it was the God of Abraham who was the first god to say "Stop sacrificing humans!". Smiley

In the story God didn't say stop sacrificing Humans. He said, no, you don't actually have to kill your son.

Take whatever implication you want out of it, but that's not what was said explicitly.

This moral relativism of yours is exactly what lets government take this freedom, then that freedom, until we have lost them all.
