That is true, though these Libertarian policies protected human rights, the presidents only introduced these policies to win against political opponents and the next election. But even then, its better to have presidents who introduce Libertarian policies for personal gain than to not introduce policies that defend freedom at all.
It would have been better if Congress had actually declared war... But Nixon just inherited the Vietnam War, and kept it going until he thought he could make political hay by ending it.

There was a real human cost to ending the Vietnam War too. The Communists slaughtered a lot of people in S. Vietnam after we left.

Anyway, Nixon's "libertarian" policies did nothing to stop our continued (and continuing) involvement in undeclared wars.

At least we are no longer under the threat of forced military training and conscription.

I'm still registered for the draft and so are my sons, even though all of us have served or are currently serving in the military.

My daughter has a name that a not-so-bright government person took for a male name and sent her a letter demanding that she register or not get college aid.

All it would take would be fear of losing the next election to prompt some president or other to manufacture a crises to justify conscription.

I know, with all of the labor saving innovations in weapons technology invented in the USA, let us hope that the draft never receives popular support again.

Let's hope we never have another real war, one where the continued existence of our country seems in peril, and Congress acts to declare war.

BTW, we sell or give all those fancy weapons to almost anybody...

That is true, the draft was ended in 1973 but people are still registered for the draft in case it needs to be reinstated. But as I said before, with automated weapons like drones and low cost weapons of mass destruction like thermobaric bombs, why would the government need a large force of conscripts?

Who knows? Why does N. Korea have a million man army?

Why does China have two million people in arms, and half a million in reserve?
