Libertarians Awaken To Find An Extra $120k In Their Bank Account

So they did what any red-blooded American would:

They spent it.     And they are now in jail.    Undecided

Montoursville, PA residents Robert Williams and wife, Tiffany, withdrew more than $100,000 from their BB&T bank account and went on a marvelous shopping spree.

They bought a camper, a Chevy and a racecar, and distributed around $15k amongst their friends and relatives.

The Williams' bank account had only $1,121 in it before the $120k accounting error was made by BB&T bank.

The couple now face 3 felony charges of theft and receiving stolen property. They couple appeared in court last week and posted bail of $25,000 each.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/09/us/bank-deposit-error-couple-spending-spree-trnd/...

Is this fair?   IMO, no.

The bank should allow the Williams to repay the $120k over time with ZERO interest.   The couple should NOT be sent to jail, or forced to post bail.

Yeah that's messed up I think anyway if someone gives it to you its yours.

If they are supposed to give it back cause mistake lets just go to the boat place and the car place and everywhere they went see if they will give the money back cause mistake.

Seems to me like a business makes mistake they can take it back but regular person can't.

What makes you say they were libertarians?

Because they believed that the income (the $120k) belonged to them to do with as they saw fit.

They didn't steal the money.  It fell in their lap. They considered it income.

If my neighbor's avocado tree drops fruit which lands in my yard, I can gather them up and sell them at the farmer's market.

If my neighbor demands that I pay him the money I got for the avocados that fell in my yard, I will laugh at him.

Hopefully, he will laugh, too.    Grin

Its seems Chief thinks anyone who does anything wrong must by default be a libertarian.

Then by inference, he must think the only good people are socialists?

Can't agree more.

The bank wants to cry foul, because they didn't keep track of 120K, because that's a drop in the bucket to their subsidized asses?  They want to ruin good folks lives (they have to be rednecks) because the ordinary people were no better at managing 120K than a bank?

While you've got me ranting, let's talk about credit card debt.  Banks want to give people what amounts to a little troll in their pocket telling them to buy everything they lay eyes on whether they can pay for it or not?  Fine.  It's (supposed to be) a free country.

But when those people the banks encouraged to buy stuff they can't afford realize they also can't afford to make credit card payments (duh!), the banks should get zero help from government to collect.  Let them ruin the debtors "credit rating," AKA the how much I love debt score.  Maybe that will make the next usurers think twice before making loans to people who think it's a good idea to finance take-out pizza.  But courts should not be enforcers for those kind of predatory lenders.  Let the lenders eat the costs of the bad debt because those financial institutions have far more training in understanding about money than do the debtors.

Sorry - got off topic.

Take government out of the business of protecting banks from the mistakes they make and the word "banker" will once again connote a solid and sober citizen who can be trusted with other people's money.

Suppose you made the error and put your money in the banks account instead of where you intended to put it. Shocked

You think the bank would have been "good people" to spend your money as fast as they could and then say, "tough shit loser"?

Those Libertarians shouldn't have to pay it back at all if they don't want.  If I fukk up and put money in your wallet then it should be up to you if you want to give it back or not.
