You were talking about consent of the governed, meaning I thought, people who fell under the jurisdiction of a government...

Are you saying that slaves weren't governed by the laws? Or that they weren't people?

Of course slaves were governed by laws.  The fugitive slave clause of the beloved U.S. Constitution, for example.

Are you saying they consented to that?

Let me guess:  Yes, they did, through their masters who spoke for them.  Just like women consented through their husbands and fathers and non-landowners consented through their landlords and indentured servants consented through their contractors.

Not all.  Many will die.  The rest will be conquered and enslaved.

The reality of course is for you the military is like roads.  You just want other people to pay your bills because you're a welfare queen

Americans consented to British rule.  And Americans owned slaves.  So according to you, that's not revokeable and the Revolution was an illegal attack on the British government and we are still British subjects

The Fugitive Slave Act attempted to govern the actions of free men, not slaves. Slaves were subject to all the laws of the state where they were held, they just didn't have any rights in regard to the administration of the laws. They may well have agreed that theft, and assault, and murder are wrong, but they certainly didn't consent to being slaves.

A good article about what the Democrats should have based impeachment on:

https://reason.com/2019/12/10/impeachment-and-the-spending-power-revisited/?utm_...

The lead in:

"In assessing impeachment, we should keep in mind Trump's usurpation of Congress' power over federal spending. This is a serious violation of the Constitution, and focusing on it overcomes some standard objections to impeachment."

As I said previously, it seems likely to me that they ignored this issue simply because they want the next Democratic/socialist president to have the ability to arbitrarily spend money for purposes other than intended by Congress.

An argument for not rushing the impeachment:

https://reason.com/2019/12/11/trump-abused-his-power-but-a-hasty-impeachment-wil...

The lead:

"The gaps in the record invite the public to dismiss impeachment as a purely partisan exercise."

The meat of the argument:

"The House Intelligence Committee declared that it would not subpoena a host of witnesses who have direct knowledge of any quid pro quo," Turley says. "Instead, it [would] proceed on a record composed of a relatively small number of witnesses with largely second-hand knowledge."
