Your employer has instructed you that any tips you make on the job belong to him as part of the conditions of employment. You are also not to tell tippers that the tip does not go to you.

You have every opportunity to pocket these tips.

Which is the more honest option of the two: Pocketing tips the tipper thinks are going to you, or turning them over to your employer?

I was in this situation about six years ago. My solution was to really turn on the charm and helpfulness and show my employer that I could bring in more for him than anyone else. I even kept helpful items on-hand, doing things like printing them out myself, rather than telling people where they could go to get them.

This moral relativism of yours is exactly what lets government take this freedom, then that freedom, until we have lost them all.

People gave you tips for scamming them over the phone? That sounds like a lie...

Turn over the tips.       It's a condition of employment.

If you don't agree to the employer's conditions of employment, don't take the job.

Governments will always devise ways to deprive an honest man of his money or property, and claim that it's legal.

That's the honorable thing to do.

Dishonorable people cheat on terms of employment, whether they be employees, or employers.

Edit: As a young child, I believed that all that sort of nastiness would be long gone before now...

I was a utopian dreamer for a long time. Another edit: I just couldn't fathom why everybody just didn't be nice to each other. How naive was I? And for so long...

It's good to dream of better things, better ways, better futures.

That's all the justification I need.

Edit: Dishonorable people will only cease to exist when God takes control on Earth as King.

That makes all sorts of nasty things like dangerous governments a real threat Shocked Shocked Shocked until God takes over...

In my experience, dishonorable people are often hard to detect. They are sneaky sneaks. Angry Angry Angry

Edit: I meant to say, consummate liars. Embarrassed

Agreed.  Ironically when I bought a restaurant, that was the prior owner's policy.  I changed it to that employees could keep their tips.  But I totally agree with you that it's a choice between employees and management.

What I didn't like was the instruction that employees aren't honest with customers.  I think that ultimately will catch up with the owners

Correct, and I'm glad you agree.

The fact that the tippers think their tip is going to you and not the employer is irrelevant.

It's not dishonest towards them; they're just stupid.

If they want their tips to go to the person they're tipping, they should get a written agreement that says "hereby".

Even if they hand it to they person they're tipping and say, "Here, this is for you," they're just idiots. They should know better.

What dumb%$#&s, thinking they know enough about the libertarian, voluntary nature of a transaction to give a gift and assume they get to have it go to the person they want.

Voluntarism. They need to buy a dictionary.

(Psst: It means, stupid dumb%$#&s, yes you, everyone but lawyers, you lose.)

Right, but that's still the owner's choice.

They are uninformed about what's really going on, not necessarily "stupid".

Exactly.     Smiley

The customer doesn't need to read and understand their server's conditions of employment agreement.
