Is This Scummy?

I was recently watching a video about how Texans are fat and sort of proud of it.

Now, so far I don't care.

However...

What this one guy does (he's a professional eater, as in, has won multiple eating contests) is looks for places with "finish it and it's free" sized portions. He orders them, finishes them, and routinely gets free meals.

I'm not disputing that he has the right to do this (and also, the businesses have every right to see his big belly coming and discriminate, refusing to serve him) but the professional eater getting free meals off restaurants everyone knows are running a gimmick and trying to make a profit... he seems scummy.

Interestingly, later in the video, when he said he'd been banned from multiple all-you-can-eat places, my opinion was reversed and I thought it was the restaurants that were scummy, because that is their business model, not a gimmick.

Again, I admit everyone involved has the legal right to do everything I've described them doing.

I just think it's scummy in some cases.

This moral relativism of yours is exactly what lets government take this freedom, then that freedom, until we have lost them all.

I don't know if it is scummy or not but casinos have the right to ban any player they want including known card counters.  Card counting is not illegal as you know.

And as you know, I believe firmly in freedom of association.  I would ban someone from my restaurant just for acting or looking too gay.

People who get the free meals in "free if you can eat it all" promotions are like people who win jackpots at slot machines or who put a grand on one number at the roulette table and hit.  The casinos love them because every time that happens, the winners tell everyone they know which encourages more people to play in those casinos.

But the restaurants that ban him are like casinos that refuse to pay off slot machine jackpots because "the machine was broken."

Even if that holds, they collectively don't get more advertising because the same professional eater is cleaning all of them out. He has one group of friends, and they will choose which restaurant to go to.

I know people this has happened to. And the casino has these little stickers on all the slots, "Malfunction voids all plays."

Apparently this practice is fairly common.

I sort of suspect that there are regulations involved, and that slots must have some minimum odds, odds too greatly against the player being banned. Otherwise they wouldn't need to be so cheatyface about it; they'd just lower the odds.

Or they may do it because frustration is often a better incentive to keep people playing than reward.

You know, in the case of the buffets, they're free to time-limit people. Some buffets do this and don't seem to lose their good customers. They're also free to set the price of their meals. And he didn't get anything free; he paid to get in. If they can't make as much money on that business model as they'd like without banning the biggest eaters, I had the thought that they really shouldn't be running a buffet.

Yes that is way scummy if they did that to me I might sue em even tho I think you are right that suing is crap.

I would cry and say about how demeaned I am cause I am fat and make like I didn't eat that much more than anybody else they just notice it when a fat person is doing it.

You are absolutely right they should not run a buffet if they got to ban the people who eat a lot. I could even get all wordy and say oh if it says all YOU can eat you means me that is a contract with everybody take off the sign if you gonna ban people.

Read the fine print Indy. It says "The management reserves the right to decide when you've had all you can eat."
